UF Awarded Gold Bicycle Friendly University Status

The University of Florida recognized as a Gold Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists.

The University of Florida has been recognized as a Gold Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. UF is the only school in Florida and one of only 31 nationwide to earn this prestigious Gold Rating.

From a campus-wide speed limit to well-maintained bike lanes, UF has worked to create a safe and bikeable environment for students, faculty and staff and visitors year-round. Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) has played a central role in achieving this recognition, offering programs that make biking accessible and convenient.

One standout program is Gator Gears, UF’s flagship bike rental program that allows students to rent bikes on a semester or annual basis at an affordable price. TAPS also operates the Secure Parking program, providing gated areas for safe bike storage, and partners with the University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) to register bikes and educate the campus community on bike safety.

Combined with UF’s extensive infrastructure, including ample bike racks, clearly marked lanes and car-free zones, these initiatives make it easy to see why UF has become a model for bike-friendly campuses.

“The goal is really to get as many people on bikes as possible,” said Brady Castellano, UF Bicycle Program Coordinator. “For our campus and the Gainesville community to be recognized in this way is fantastic. It set us apart not only from other colleges, but from other towns and cities.”

Looking ahead, Castellano hopes to elevate UF’s bicycle program further. “I aspire to reach Platinum Bicycle Friendly University status, which would be a tremendous honor,” he said.
