From Custodian to UFPD Officer

Growing up, Dwayne Williams always dreamed of becoming a law enforcement officer but when he began his career at the University of Florida  in 2020, he couldn’t imagine the twists and turns ahead.

Williams, born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but living in Gainesville since he was eight, always had a knack for making a positive impact on his community. At Gainesville High School, he was president of the “Canes On Da Mic” Poetry Club, President of the “Gentleman’s Club” and a National Thespian Honor Society member.

Hired initially as a custodial worker for Facilities Services, Williams was assigned to the University of Florida Police Department and their facility. It wasn’t long until his work ethic and demeanor caught the attention of Linda Stump-Kurnick, Assistant Vice President for Public Safety and former UFPD chief.

“Dwayne was always very mindful of how he presented himself and was extremely service-orientated.” said Stump-Kurnick.  “He showcased all the qualities we look for in UFPD officers.”

Through conversations with officers and Stump-Kurnick, Dwayne “grew to appreciate the department’s mission.” Eventually, he accepted the opportunity to be sponsored through the Police Academy and pursued his dream of serving as a law enforcement officer for UFPD.

Having just finished his time at the Police Academy, Dwayne is set to begin his next chapter today. “He’s such a compassionate and intelligent man with tons of integrity. He’s going to be a great asset to the UFPD team, and I couldn’t be more excited for him,” said Stump-Kurnick.

Williams is more than ready to take the next steps in his journey, saying, “I’m extremely excited and bubbling with anticipation to start this new chapter. I fully intend to be an asset not only to UFPD but also to the UF community.”.
