Staff Spotlight: Mayra Bernabe-De Leon
Administrative Specialist
Bio: I’m someone who thrives in dynamic, people-centered environments, which is what drew me to my role at UF. I graduated from the UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2018 with my bachelor’s degree, and since then, I’ve been fortunate to build my career right here in the Gator community. Before stepping into my current role, I worked in the UF Department of Psychology as an Academic Assistant and later at the UF Health Cancer Center as an Academic Program Specialist, experiences that strengthened my passion for supporting students, faculty and meaningful academic work.
As a Gainesville native, UF has always been a part of my world, and being able to contribute to a community that values growth, collaboration and curiosity feels especially meaningful. Whether I’m working with students, colleagues or campus partners, I love being part of a place where every day brings something new to learn and someone new to connect with.
What is an identity you’re proud to share?
“I’m a proud Puerto Rican, shaped by the rich blend of Spanish and African heritage that grounds my values and sense of self. My cultural background has taught me the importance of strong family and community ties, vibrant celebration and resilience in the face of adversity. These traditions aren’t just part of where I come from, they influence how I show up in the world.
Growing up in a culture that honors unity, joy and perseverance has shaped the way I connect with others, navigate challenges and celebrate life. I carry these values with me in every environment I enter, and they continue to guide how I build relationships, uplift others and contribute to my community.”
What does your role entail?
“In this role, I handle the administrative activities of Environmental Health & Safety. I provide highly skilled administrative support to both the Senior Director, Dr. Shail Singh, and four Associate Directors in the Division of Environmental Health & Safety, as well as assist the Business Affairs Human Resources department with all personnel matters.”
What is your favorite part about working at UF?
“The collaborative culture here is incredible. Everyone is open to sharing ideas and working together.”
Fun fact about you:
“I’ve never said no to a spontaneous trip with friends. I’m passionate about traveling and exploring new cultures and places is my favorite way to recharge.”
